Auld Lang Syne
Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? I have two memorable acquaintances that have remained in my thoughts.
An admission: I’ve never been a fan of New Year’s Eve. There’s an awful amount of expectation, hope, and alcohol attached to a night that, for all intents and purposes, is just the last box on a calendar.
But the New Year’s Eve of 1999 was different. We weren’t just heralding a new year, or even a new century — we were ringing in a whole new millennium. There was a sense of anticipation that transcended the usual clichés surrounding the midnight transition from one year to the next. Humankind was collectively living on the edge, with the added suspense of whether the world would be brought down by a computer glitch known as the Y2K bug.
It was exhilarating.
